Founded by Moulay Indriss II at the end of the 8th century, Fes is known as the first Islamic capital of Morocco, and was the home of the very first Moroccan dynasty. A maze of stone, marble and plaster surrounded by lush orchards, Fes is widely considered the spiritual centre of Morocco.

The aura of 1001 nights lingers in the old town, with its minarets, and spider web of alleys lined with houses and shops. The back streets are a myriad of workshops, where potters, charcoal burners, goldsmiths and weavers still ply their ancient trades.

In the Jewish quarter, or Mellah, you will find some of the finest ironwork in the country, whilst nearby the leather tanners still employ ancient methods and techniques to treat and dye hides.
